Bodegas Zárate is located in Padrenda, near the southern edge of the Salnés Valley. The estate is known as a pioneer of quality Albariño, and it’s associated with the Albariño Festival in Cambados, founded by Ernesto Zárate in the 1950s. Today, seventh-generation Eulogio Pomares is at the helm of the winery, farming 10 hectares split up into 14 plots of Albariño, Loureiro, Espadeiro and Caíño. Since taking over in 2000, Pomares has converted to regenerative and biodynamic practices, and soils have not been tilled since 1994. Bodegas Zárate makes a wide range of wines, from the entry-level Zárate to single-parcel wines like El Palomar and Tras da Viña. Pomares is another pioneer of red winemaking in Rías Baixas, and the winery makes tiny amounts of Espadeiro and Caíño. In 2012, Pomares launched his personal project Fento Wines, and also has an eponymous line of wines with single-vineyard bottlings that fall outside the DO Rías Baixas.
