Château Vignelaure is rather like the relatively nearby Domaine Trévallon, in that it is most famous for its red wine - a long-lived blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
The history of the property extends back into Roman times with evidence of vineyards from the first century before Christ. The property was revitalised in the 1960s under the hand of George Brunet the erstwhile proprietor of Château La Lagune in the Médoc.
He rechristened the estate Château Vignelaure (until then it had been called Estève, which he felt was too similar to Bordeaux appellation of Saint Estèphe), and the 'vines of Laure' the property became.
The first vintage was in 1970 was only a single red wine with Cabernet Sauvignon from vines bought over from La Lagune and the local varieties of Grenache and Syrah. The red remains the flagship and one of the greatest examples of its kind in Provence. Eloi Dürrbach, the proprietor of Domaine Trévallon was the original winemaker and it was from Vignelaure that he took inspiration for his Cabernet Sauvignon blends at his new Baux de Provence property. Since then the estate has added several more reds, whites and rosés to its range.
After a period of slight stagnation, in 2007 Vignelaure was purchased by Scandinavians Mette and Bengt Sundstrøm who were the first to plant white varieties following a complete overhaul of the whole property. Noted art collectors, the Sundstrøms use the beautiful château as an extension of their galleries. The wines continue to grow in quality, stature and celebrity.
The property is open to visitors by appointment.
