On the highest hill of Bandol, overlooking the Mediterranean, an Italian, Modesto Ramognino, planted a vineyard of Mourvèdre in 1956. Against all the odds, and in a Jean de Florette style (no water or electricity) he created a wine which reminded him (and others) of the great red wines of his Piedmont homeland.

Catherine and Henri de Saint Victor persuaded him to sell to them in 1977 and proceeded to establish and shape Château de Pibarnon into the estate it has become today. They planted more of the 16 available hectares (now 20ha under vine) to add to the original 3.5ha of Mourvèdre, and they also rebuilt the bastide from the ground up.

From the 1980s onwards the wines, especially the red, began to get noticed and to win multiple medals and awards, as they still do today.
The de Saint Victors purchased a neighbouring amphitheatre of land and planted some of that with more vines bringing up the total vineyard to 20ha. In 1989 Eric de Saint Victor, their son took over the winemaking after studying in Bordeaux, he was joined in 2008 by Burgundy-trained cellar master Marie Laroze.

The estate and its wines continue to grow in stature and celebrity. It is a breathtakingly beautiful place to visit. The wines are expressive and poised; the rosés in particular show red-berry fruit and a lively acidity, balanced by a subtle mineral and herbaceous edge — a serious style not just designed for light sipping.
