Southern Appellations - Brunello di Montalcino
The Costanti counts have been making Brunello for just about as long as Biondi-Santi. Despite being just 23 years old when he inherited the celebrated property in 1983, Andrea Costanti rose to the challenge and consistently crafts some of the denomination’s finest examples. Rich in both tannins and acidity, the Brunello oozes nobility and architecture. In great years, he makes less Rosso. Even then, it can be almost too powerful, too austere, too Brunello-like. On the other hand, he won’t make a Riserva if he believes it will compromise the straight Brunello. When it is produced, the Riserva isn’t necessarily better than the former. However, it typically lives up to the spirit of the category, requiring much longer in the cellar to come around.
