Poggerino

Once part of the enormous Albola estate, Poggerino’s modest 12.5 hectares are contained in the cool northeastern corner of Radda. Here, shaly stones sit atop clay giving sturdier, weightier wines than those on sandier outcroppings further south. Owner and winemaker, Piero Lanza interprets the area with palpable transparency. Over the years, he has moved away from small barrels to ageing in larger cask (and jokes his wines allergic to new wood). He chooses the Riserva category for his top wine - Bugialla which hails from vines planted in the mid-1970s. His well-executed goal is to amplify intensity as opposed to sheer power.
