Cupano

In the far, warm western extreme of Montalcino, Cupano has been a unique gem since its inception. It was established in the 90s by French filmmaker Lionel Cousin who passed away in 2021. His longtime manager Andrea Polidoro is leading the estate thoughtfully into a new era to meet climate challenges while preserving Cupano’s essence. He has reduced the amount of new barriques and introduced larger barrels – though still insists on exclusively French oak. Polidoro has also converted some of the vineyards to guyot, no longer tops and seeds mixed cover crop to increase nitrogen. Most recent tastings reveal freshness and vibrancy with alcohol in check though the wines are still generously and gloriously Mediterranean.
