Southern Appellations - Brunello di Montalcino
L’Aietta is Montalcino’s tiniest winery, a one-man show operating out of two neighbouring shacks. Francesco Mulinari was still a teenager when started in 2001 with a few steeply terraced rows on the western edge of the town. He chose to plant bush vines and is among the first in the region to bring back this old training system. In 2004, he increased his holdings by buying a 0.5ha plot in Montalcino’s southeastern sector of Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The profound and textured Brunello is a blend of the two areas. From 2019, he makes a miniscule selection from his original site which he calls ‘Alberelli’. It is more sinewy and brooding. Production totals 7000 bottles with his other fascinating bits and pieces. Construction for a proper cellar has just broken ground.
