Southern Appellations - Brunello di Montalcino
Il Marroneto has established itself among Montalcino’s most consistently exceptional producers – even in supremely challenging years. The wines express rather than denature the vintage and are always faithful to their corner of the zone. Nestled on a precipitous slope under the town of Montalcino, the vineyards are exposed to cool breezes from the north. A total of 8 hectares sit on marine sand rich in microminerals which gives a floral rather than fruity character.
Describing himself as a naturalista, second-generation Alessandro Mori took the reins when he was just 15 years old. His approach includes spontaneous ferments, long refinement in large old oak casks, no temperature control and minimal sulphur use.
When his son Iacopo joined him fulltime in 2019, Alessandro asked him to make his own Rosso selection. The eponymously named bottling is a bridge between the delightful Ignaccio Rosso and the finessed Brunello. The top wine is a selection from the estate’s oldest vineyard - Madonna delle Grazie - planted in 1975. It is always vinified separately but only during ageing, does Alessandro decide whether or not to bottle it separately. While it is usually austere, it is never muscle-bound. The first Riserva was crafted from a single cask of Madonna delle Grazie in 2013. The second, from 2020, is due to be released in 2026.
