Southern Appellations - Brunello di Montalcino
Owned by the noble Sienese Colombini clan, Fattoria dei Barbi’s contribution to the reputation and growth of Montalcino is undeniable. The estate’s first Brunello label appeared in 1892, cementing Barbi’s legacy as one of its founders alongside Biondi Santi. The Colombinis continued to trailblaze throughout the 20th century, establishing a thriving distribution network across Italy and abroad.

Today the estate is led by Stefano Cinelli Colombini. With a great passion for the region, he has written two books and inaugurated a museum dedicated to its history. He has also played a key role in research projects examining Sangiovese clones and vinification techniques.

From an enviable 40 hectares registered for Brunello in southeast Montalcino, the estate proposes three bottlings including a single vineyard and Riserva in selected vintages. Their flagship ‘blu label’ varies in quality but can represent good value within the realm of Brunello when it hits the mark.

While the wines currently lack the luster of the denomination’s most exciting offerings, there is no denying this estate’s historic relevance - not to mention the DNA for future glory.
