Southern Appellations - Brunello di Montalcino
Casanova di Neri was among the nouvelle vague espousing a modern approach to Brunello, and the ambitiously priced wines have garnered lavish scores.
A pioneer of single vineyard Brunello, the estate launched its first – Cerretalto - with the 1981 vintage. On the eastern edge of the zone, the cool, rocky site is one of the few with volcanic origins. Only made in select vintages, this bold and commanding wine is given an additional year of ageing prior to release, though not labeled as a Riserva.
Current owner, Giacomo Neri took the baton after his father’s untimely death in 1991. Soon after, he added ‘Tenuta Nuova’ to the lineup. From the Cetine vineyard in the far south of the denomination, it is profuse, richly textured and decidedly Mediterranean in expression.
Today, Giacomo works with his sons Giovanni and Gianlorenzo, the former winemaker since 2012. Their new Giovanni Neri bottling (as of the 2018 vintage) pays tribute to their grandfather and founder. It hails from the area of Sesta in Montalcino’s southeast. Old vines yield small, concentrated berries giving earthy, layered depths.
Even the ‘classic’ white label Brunello (made since 1978) highlights place as it combines the estate’s historic plots in the northeastern zone of Torrenieri. (In vintages not produced, Cerretalto is blended in.)
Over the years, winemaking has become more refined and much less extractive with defter oak integration. The wines are contemporary and polished but not lacking in personality and even allow some rusticity to occasionally poke through.
