Southern Appellations - Brunello di Montalcino
A reference in Montalcino’s southwestern quadrant, Argiano was acquired by Brazilian banker André Santos Esteves in 2013. Under the direction of CEO and winemaker Bernardino Sani, this historic estate has seen a dynamic transformation and is now making some of the region’s most contemporary Brunello.
After extensive soil studies conducted by Alberto Antonini and Pedro Parra, the makeover started in the vineyard. It includes a switch to guyot training and lower density plantings. The soil has been revitalized to re-established biodiversity and roots are inoculated with mycorrhizal spores to increase grape quality and vine resistance. Sani has also installed nets and applies kaolin to protect from sunburn.
The restoration continued in the cellar, which has been completely cleaned up. In terms of winemaking, Sani has switched to larger casks for Brunello and in some years reduces ageing in wood to the discipline’s bare minimum of 2 years in the name of preserving freshness. Beside the stalwart Brunello, Vigna del Suolo is a single vineyard bottling from a massal selection planted in the 1960s on a limestone-rich outcropping. Solengo is the estate’s historic Super Tuscan, a barrique-aged Bordeaux blend created with the help of Giacomo Tachis in 1995. With slightly less new oak and less time in wood, even this has lightened up.
As of 2021 the estate received organic certification. It is also plastic-free and carbon neutral.
