In 1984, Giovanna Rizzolio, whose family had been mill owners and silk merchants, purchased her family’s summer retreat in Tre Stelle and associated landholdings, which were previously planted to various crops, complete with local people who worked the land and sold the produce as sharecroppers. Giovanna set a new course, took to her tractor, and by 1992 had released her first estate-bottled Barbaresco. In 1997, her husband Ito and sons Davide and Riccardo joined the family business, toiling in relative obscurity for many years, farming without herbicides and paying particular attention to pruning and soil management. In the winery, caps are now submerged, and a subterranean cellar expansion allows cooler fermentation and ageing in a cool environment. Today, the estate’s entire 6ha production is allocated, and recent releases have received staggering critical acclaim, including a handful of perfect scores. The Barbaresco are high-toned, perfumed and pretty with silky profiles and an enveloping finish.
