Monte Amiata: Tuscany's Best Kept Secret

With Andrea Eby, Ugo Fabbri
Wednesday Aug 7 2024 6:00 pm CEST

Summary:

The wines of Toscana’s Montalcino are revered the world over and the price of vineyard land within the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG reflects that renown. However, just a short 30 minute drive from Montalcino lies the largely undiscovered world of Monte Amiata. Previously primarily known, in wine circles, for the important role it plays in sheltering the vineyards of Montalcino from intense summer storms that can develop on the sun-soaked Tuscan coastline, today Monte Amiata is garnering attention for new reasons. Italian Programs Director, Andrea Eby, will be joined by Ugo Fabbri, one of the founders of Monte Amiata upstart winery BAKKANALI.Together they will share some secrets of this largely unknown terroir and delve into the past, present and bright future of the region. Andrea and Ugo will open a couple bottles of BAKKANALI during the presentation and encourage viewers to track down a bottle of BAKKANALI and join in the discussion.

Ugo Fabbri
When I was a little boy, my grandfather used to pour a little wine into my glass of water, saying: “Drink this, it’s good for the blood!”
I started out working in ideas and communications before coming across a field that interested me even more: wine. I came to Montalcino 10 years ago and started hungrily devouring this area’s magical nature and legendary characters, whose stories and life experiences – as well, of course, as their bottles – contributed to the formation of my palate, influencing my philosophy of wine-making.
By no means shy, sometimes even too exuberant, I have attempted to convey my personality in sales over the years, treating wine seriously but without forgetting its original spirit of conviviality and cheer.
BAKKANALI is a dream come true for me, a major professional and human challenge, placing my bets on a unique terroir that remains to be fully discovered and exploited.
